Abstract
Larvae of central European Helodidae were previously only known from surface waters. However, representatives of the genus Cyphon have now been found in ground water wells in Vienna and at Mondsee (Austria). In view of the circumstances and in view of the fact that collections have been repeated over ten years, accidental occurrence in the ground water appears improbable. It is assumed that larvae actively intrude into the sediment and into ground water near the banks, from surface waters.
