Summary
In a várzea lake of the Central Amazon the planktonic crustaceans disappear almost completely after the inflow of suspension‐rich Amazon water. An initial small increase in numbers of individuals is accompanied by increased egg production in Diaphanosoma sarsi and Notodiaptomus amazonicus, suggesting an improved food supply for the Zooplankton. Possible reasons for the complete disappearance of the crustaceans are discussed, these being a dilution effect, flushing out of the plankton by the current, and predation of planktivorous fish.
Zusammenfassung
In einem Várzea‐See Zentralamazoniens verschwindet das Crustaceenplankton fast völlig nach Einströmen von suspensoidreichem Amazonaswasser. Ein zunächst dabei auftretender kleiner Anstieg der Individuendichte geht mit einer erhöhten Eiproduktion von Diaphanosoma sarsi und Notodiaptomus amazonicus einher, was auf ein verbessertes Nahrungsangebot für das Zooplankton hindeutet. Mögliche Gründe für das vollständige Verschwinden der Crustaceen werden diskutiert. Denkbar sind Verdünnungseffekte, Auswaschen des Planktons durch Strömung und Fraß durch planktivore Fische.
Resumo
Em um lago de várzea da região central‐amazônica há um desaparecimento quase total de crustáceos planctônicos depois da entrada de água rica em material em suspensão proveniente do rio Amazonas. Um pequeno aumento inicial de indivíduos ocorre paralelamente com uma maior produção de ovos de Diaphanosoma sarsi e Notodiaptomus amazonicus. O que significa uma melhoria na oferta de alimentos para o zooplancton. Possíveis motivos para o desaparecimento total dos crustáceos são discutidos, como a diluição da densidade populacional, transporte do material planctônico através de corrente e predação através de peixes planctófagos.
