On the use of the term ‘grapheme’

Pages 135-148 | Received 01 Oct 1984, Published online: 13 Dec 2007

Abstract

Psychologists and others have used the word ‘grapheme’ in several distinct and incompatible senses. The history and motivation of these various usages is reviewed, particularly in relationship to the concept of the ‘phoneme’ and the status accorded to written language. Implications of each usage are considered as they concern the meaning of related terms and as they affect the conduct of theoretical debate about spelling-sound translation in reading.
