Summary
This study provides evidence for heterostyly in Jasminum fruticans L. There are two morphs, one long-styled, the other short-styled, which are differentiated on the basis of the relative heights of the stigma and anthers and by their self and within-morph incompatibility. Viable seed production in natural populations was found to be greater in the short styled morph than in the long styled morph, however in controlled crosses seed set was similar in the two forms. It is hypothesised that the existence of two pollination pathways may maximise reproductive success in the face of a range of ecological factors limiting maximum fecundity, and thereby act to maintain the heterostylous polymorphism in J. fruticans.
