Abstract
Hydroponically grown French beans cv Black Valentine plants showed reduced growth with increasing concentrations of Al in their culture solutions. Leaves and stems of plants grown in Al contained Al, but also control levels of Ca as a result of the culture method used. Plants grown in Al had higher photosynthesis rates than control plants in distilled water, but reduced translocation rates. Xylem injection of Al in the transpiration stream of plants grown continuously in Hoagland's solution caused a rapid decline in rates of photosynthesis and translocation.
