Editorial

This Editorial is being written shortly after your editor and 200 other delegates from 19 countries returned from the IOA’s 23rd World Congress in National Harbor, MD (Washington, DC). Washington was the site of the IOA’s first World Congress in 1973 and the 6th World Congress in 1983. A return visit to Washington was long overdue.

Although congress was not in session, we had the attention of the decision makers. Kevin, McCarthy, U. S. House Majority Leader drafted a letter of welcome to the IOA stating:

Welcome to the 23rd International Ozone Association World Congress! It is great to have the world of water treatment here in our nation’s capital to share ideas and best practices to bring the world the essential resource of water.

As we navigate the way through a complex regulatory environment here at home, your educational services are vital to developing and promoting best practices in the industry to meet the rising standards for water quality. Using ozone as a unique approach to increasing water quality is complex, and it takes a great wealth of knowledge to achieve the best for billions of people worldwide. Major global public health initiatives are greatly influenced by the decisions you make, and I hope this conference continues to promote the best possible outcomes for international professionals.”

Charles, Bott, Director of Water Technology and Research at the Hampton Roads Sanitation District in southeast Virginia (HRSD) delivered the Congress keynote address titled “Hampton Roads District’s Vision for Managed Aquifer recharge in Eastern Virginia: Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow”. He reviewed their work to develop a process to produce treated water suitable for reinjection in to the receiving aquifer. Ozone is a strong candidate for the process technology train.

Water reuse was one of several major topics of the conference. Water reuse is viewed as a key factor in preserving our precious groundwater resources and there are many studies and process designs underway. Many technical conferences by other organizations are also discussing reuse. We are encouraging those working on reuse to submit papers to OS&E for peer review and publication.

An invited speaker to the Congress was Dr. Philip Mollica of the American College of Integrative Medicine and Dentistry. He reviewed the use of ozone treated water in dental applications. OS&E has published several papers showing the benefits of ozone treated water. Dr. Mollica’s presentation showed how this can be applied in practice with demonstrable positive results. We would like to publish additional papers on this topic and submissions suitable for peer review are encouraged.

These are only a couple of examples of the World Congress presentations. Papers were given on ozone system costs, food preservation, cyanotoxins, biofiltration and feed gas supply.

The IOA offers members a number of benefits including subscriptions to our news magazine, Ozone News and our technical journal, Ozone: Science & Engineering. Also, members are given discounted registration to conferences such as described above. If you are using ozone, considering ozone for your facility, or want to know more about ozone, consider joining IOA. We have much to offer, most importantly the ability to meet the industry experts at our regional meetings and World Congresses.
