Welcome Letter from the New Editor-In-Chief

ORCID Icon

It gives me immense pleasure to welcome all our authors, reviewers, and readers to the first edition of Ozone: Science and Engineering for which I have acted as Editor-in-chief.

I am extremely proud and honored to take over this role, after the outstanding leadership of Barry Loeb, outgoing Editor-in-chief (1998-2024). Over the past 25 years, Barry has done a superb job, ensuring that Ozone: Science and Engineering has maintained its place as a leading journal of ozone research. I am strongly committed to continuing efforts with the goal of developing the journal in the upward direction to ensure its highest quality. I am aware of the responsibilities that the EiC’s role entails, and I am approaching it with excitement and forward-looking.

Since its inception in the 1970s by the International Ozone Association, the journal has evolved from strength to strength and is now publishing papers covering a wide range of ozone research related to both established areas including water treatment and novel applications of the ozone molecule and related oxidants. The journal will continue to publish high-quality ozone and related oxidant research covering wide range of applications and new fundamental science. Original research articles form the bulk of our published papers, but also, we welcome systematic reviews and short communication articles. We will encourage all authors to work on rigorous methodologies for conducting their research and employ validated techniques for ozone (or related oxidants) measurements to ensure that the results reported in the journal are valid and reliable.

The publication landscape is evolving rapidly and Ozone: Science and Engineering will need to ensure full advantage is taken of the new models and tools of publication and information dissemination to reach an even wider audience and increase its visibility.

Peer review remains a vital element of the assessment of articles we publish. Not only it acts as a filter to ensure that only high-quality research that advances the field is published but it also determines the validity, significance, and originality of the studies we publish. Accepted articles are often significantly improved after addressing the referees’ comments, a fact that is widely acknowledged. We recognize that the process can sometimes be daunting, due to delays in decisions, rejections, or overwhelming demand for reviewers’ time. These difficulties can be lessened by an effective and active editorial office and a broad board membership.

I am fortunate to be supported by a highly committed, hard-working, and enthusiastic team of Associate Editors including Professor Dr. J. (Hans) van Leeuwen, Professor Héctor Valdés Morales, and Dr Koji Kosaka, who regularly go above and beyond to ensure that all submissions are processed and reviewed as timely as possible, fairly, and according to the ethics of publishing. Our publisher, Taylor & Francis, works tirelessly to ensure that our journal is supported and is at the forefront of modern publishing developments.

We are always interested in accepting high-quality papers in ozone and related oxidants. We invite everyone working in these fields to consider submitting their research results to Ozone: Science and Engineering. Every two years, we offer the Harvey M. Rosen Memorial Award to recognize the best paper published in Ozone: Science and Engineering. The winner of the Harvey Rosen Award is selected by the journal’s Editorial Board based on assessment of all papers published during the two-year period between the World Congresses of the International Ozone Association.

Finally, I would like to thank all authors who have chosen Ozone: Science and Engineering for publishing the findings of their research studies and thank all our reviewers for the hard work they put in to ensure that the papers we publish are thoroughly scrutinized. We are expanding our Editorial Board and are accepting expressions of interest from those who have expertise and commitment to reviewing papers in the fields of ozone and oxidation. If you would like to be considered for this exciting role in Ozone: Science and Engineering, please contact us.
