STATEMENT OF RETRACTION

Upon a thorough investigation, it has been determined that the paper entitled “Study on Dissolution Rate Enhancement of Poorly Water Soluble Drug: Contributions of Solubility Enhancement and Relatively Low Micelle Diffusivity” by Vishal Y. Joshi and Manohar R. Sawant, published in the Journal of Dispersion Science and Technology, Volume 27, Number 8, pp. 1141–1150, 2006 has duplicated large portions of text from a published work entitled “Surfactant-Mediated Dissolution: Contributions of Solubility Enhancement and Relatively Low Micelle Diffusivity” by Anand Balakrishnan, Bhagwant D. Rege, Gordon L. Amidon, and James E. Polli, published in the Wiley-Liss, Inc./American Pharmacists Association publication Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Vol. 93, Number 8, August 2004. The manuscript by Joshi and Sawant was accepted for publication in the Journal of Dispersion Science and Technology in January 2006, one year and five months after the manuscript by Balakrishnan et al. had been published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

A comparison of the manuscript by Joshi and Sawant to the manuscript published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences yielded the following conclusions:

Citations in the Joshi and Sawant publication do not note the application of a model that was derived and published two years earlier in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences manuscript. The model derivation, including numbered and unnumbered equations, is identical to the original manuscript. Also, citation 14, page 1142, (citing on the basis of the Noyes-Whitney equation) and Table 1, footnote f, page 1144, (citing on the basis of the molecular weight of sodium lauryl sulfate) do not substantively reflect the degree to which the Balakrishnan et al. material is used.

Very large portions of text from Balakrishnan et al. are used verbatim, specifically the Abstract, Introduction, Theory, Results and Discussion, Conclusion, and Appendix 1 sections.

As a result, we are retracting the paper by Vishal Y. Joshi and Manohar R. Sawant published in the Journal of Dispersion Science and Technology, Volume 27, Number 8, pages 1141–1150, 2006 from the electronic online version of this journal, and the paper published in the printed version should not be cited.
