Adsorption and removal ability of magnetic pineapple peel biochar-Based for amoxicillin

Abstract

In this study, pineapple peel (PAP) was successfully modified into a novel magnetic biochar (M–BCPAP) by co-precipitating it with iron magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) for amoxicillin removal from aqueous solutions. Characterization of the synthesized M-BCPAP was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and Brunauer – Emmett – Teller (BET) surface analysis. The suitability of the adsorption of Amoxicillin (AMX) on M-BCPAP with Freundlich, Langmuir, and Temkin isotherm models was investigated and it was determined that the isotherm with the best fitness with adsorption was the Langmuir isotherm (R2=0.9998), which suggests single-layer adsorption. A maximum adsorption capacity of 18.6 mg/g was obtained with Langmuir isotherm. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model had a better fit with the best correlation to the kinetic data. Various adsorption parameters such as pH (2–6), initial AMX concentration (10–100 mg/L), amount of adsorbent (50–125 mg) and adsorption time (10–180 min) were investigated in the adsorption of AMX on M-BCPAP. As a result, the obtained data show that the synthesized magnetic biochar is a highly effective and low-cost, environmentally friendly alternative adsorbent in the removal of amoxicillin from aqueous solutions.
