The correct equation appears below: $$\text{Independence Index}=\frac{\text{Internal Work Trips }(\text{work and live inside city})}{\text{External Work Trips }(\text{out}-{\text{commutes}}^1+\text{in}-{\text{commutes}}^2)}$$

• 1: Out-commutes: Commutes made be workers who live in a given city and work outside it

• 2: In-commutes: Commutes made by workers who work in a given city and live outside it

All conceptual categories of commutes are included in this equation. No category of commuters is excluded.

The equation has been corrected in the online version of the article.
