Editor’s Note

The Journal of Legal Medicine, along with the American College of Legal Medicine, takes great pride in supporting the scholarly contributions and professional development of law students and students in the health professions. In this issue of the Journal of Legal Medicine, we celebrate outstanding student contributions to scholarship.

First, we present the results of the National Health Law Moot Court Competition (2021-22). The National Health Law Moot Court Competition is hosted annually by Southern Illinois University School of Law. The American College of Legal Medicine has proudly served as a sponsor of this important academic event for decades. An introductory essay, the Problem, and the Winning Brief written by Jacey DuBois and Lawson Hamilton are included.

Additionally, we are pleased to publish the winning papers of two annual student writing competitions sponsored by the American College of Legal Medicine (ACLM): The Loletta M. Orr Postdoctoral Student Writing Competition presents the Orr Award for the outstanding original paper on legal medicine, and The Student Writing Competition in Law, Medicine and Bioethics presents the Hirsch Award for the outstanding paper submitted. Both competitions are open to students studying medicine, law, dentistry, podiatry, nursing, pharmacy, health science, health care administration, or public health.

This year’s Orr Award was presented to Cathleen London, MD, CIPP/US, a 2022 JD Candidate at University of Maine School of Law, for her article, “DOJ Overreach: The Criminalization of Physicians,” which starts on page 191. Katherine Schiller, a student at Georgia State University College of Law, won The Hirsh Award for “Life after Brain Death,” which starts on page 205. In addition, we have included abstracts of the Basanta Poster Award winners: Daniel K. Chen, first place; Sierra Murphy, second place; and Tiffany Penner, third place.

Sincerely,Joseph D. Piorkowski, Jr., DO, JD, MPH, FCLM
