The Individual and Collective Facets of Pride in Chinese College Students

Abstract

Three studies were conducted to investigate the individual and collective facets of pride. Studies 1 and 2 demonstrated the existence of three facets of pride (individual, relational, and national). The Individual and Collective Pride Scale (ICPS) was developed and found to have good reliability and validity. Study 3 showed that relational pride could be enhanced by priming interdependent self-construals. These findings suggested that pride can be subdivided into individual, relational, and national facets and that the ICPS is a reliable and valid instrument for the assessment of pride.

Notes

Note. r = bivariate Pearson correlation coefficient; β = regression coefficient pertaining to the focal variable after controlling for gender, age, and the other two facets of pride; ΔR 2 = additional variance explained by the addition of the focal facet of pride.

*p < .05. **p < .01.

Note. p 1 was for Δχ2 comparing the current model with the previous model. GFI = goodness-of-fit index; AGFI = adjusted goodness-of-fit index; NNFI = non-normed fix index; CFI = comparative fit index; RMSEA = root mean square error of approximation; AIC = Akaike Information Criterion.

Note. r = bivariate Pearson correlation coefficient; β = regression coefficient pertaining to the focal variable after controlling for gender, grade, and the other two facets of pride when analyzing the data from Individual and Collective Pride Scale. When examining the unique contributions of either National Pride in Specific Achievements or General National Pride, we controlled for Individual Pride and Relational Pride, but not other measures of national pride. ΔR 2  = additional variance explained by the addition of the focal facet of pride.
