Using Occupational Titles to Convey an Individual's Location in Social Stratification Dimensions

Notes

Extraction Workers and Community and Social Service Providers were the unrepresented occupational categories. These occupations were not excluded for any systematic reason.

The publicly available data file distinguishes the wave in which a respondent participated.

A review of the data suggested that this question was problematic, as respondents had a tendency to skip it, though it is unclear why this was the case. Compared to the other questions, it was more involved, with a longer set of instructions. Response rates for this question ranged from 67.7% to 89.4% as compared to the Social Class Rank question (M = 78.9%, SD = 0.047, normally distributed).

Because our selection of occupations from the Nam–Powers list was not random, there is the possibility of selection bias in the following comparisons.
