Like mermaids or centaurs: psychological functions that are constructed through interaction (Como sirenas o centauros: funciones psicológicas que se construyen en interacción)

ABSTRACT

Rivière proposed a taxonomy of psychological functions organized around a set of dimensions that qualify human development. Type 3 functions involve the inculturation of aspects defined in biology. Its alteration comprises the core of the cognitive phenotype in autism, and understanding its genesis allows for conceptualizing autism as the product of a process of adaptation to the physical and social environment, based on atypical restrictions both in processing social stimuli and in participating in meaningful interactions.

RESUMEN

Rivière propuso una taxonomía de funciones psicológicas, organizadas en torno a un conjunto de dimensiones que cualifican el desarrollo humano. Las funciones tipo 3 implican la enculturación de aspectos definidos en la biología. Su alteración constituye el núcleo del fenotipo cognitivo en autismo, y la comprensión de su génesis permite conceptualizar el autismo como el producto de un proceso de adaptación al medio físico y social, que parte de restricciones atípicas tanto en el procesamiento de estímulos sociales, como en la participación en interacciones significativas.

Rivière dictated his Functions Model in a series of lectures given at the University of Buenos Aires (published as the last three chapters of Volume III of the Compilation Ángel Rivière, Obras Escogidas) and also in his classes on Alteraciones Psicológicas de la Cognición (Psychological Cognitive Disorders) at the Faculty of Psychology of the UAM. It was during these classes in the 1998–99 academic term that we took notes of the names for each type of function.
