Abstract

Type of stimulation influence on automaticity development in visual search tasks. In this work, we attempt to compare acquisition of automaticity in visual search tasks when familiar and unfamiliar stimuli are used. The unfamiliar stimuli were comparable to alphanumeric characters, they differentiated on the degree of familiarity. We analyzed if the same levels of automation were obtained in both cases, and the factors that affected development of automaticity they were all the same. For that, we designed the same task with familiar and unfamiliar stimuli, and we considered the different levels of consistency and discriminability. Once the results were obtained and analized, we found the same levels of automaticity were obtained in both cases, though when the material was unfamiliar more of a training was necessary. Furthermore, in this case, the perceptive aspects as discriminability between targets and distractors affected on the development of a parallel processing.
