Numerical cognition in Brazil: a narrative review of a growing research field (Cognición numérica en Brasil: una revisión de un campo de investigación en desarrollo)

ABSTRACT

The objective of this paper is to describe the trends in current Brazilian research in numerical cognition, highlighting papers published in the last five years. The studies included in the narrative review have been described considering three thematic groups: numbers; operations and problem-solving; and difficulties or disabilities in learning mathematics. Besides describing the most recent papers in this field, the article includes specific issues, i.e., the active research groups and ways of publishing the research results. The most important conclusions are: there is a diverse growing research field of numerical cognition in Brazil; there is an emphasis on basic research, rather than applied research; most of the research is about children with learning disabilities or difficulties. Despite this growing research in the field, there are no recorded repercussions of the research in Brazil´s educational system, which is a very important challenge for Brazilian researchers.

RESUMEN

El objetivo de este artículo es describir las tendencias en la investigación actual brasileña en lo que respecta a la cognición numérica, destacando artículos publicados en los últimos cinco años. Los estudios incluidos en el análisis se han descrito considerando tres grupos temáticos: números; operaciones y resolución de problemas y dificultades o discapacidades en el aprendizaje de las matemáticas. Además de describir los artículos más recientes de este campo, el artículo incluye temas específicos, a saber los grupos de investigación activos y las formas de publicar los resultados de la investigación. Las conclusiones más importantes son: hay un campo de investigación diverso cada vez mayor de la cognición numérica en Brasil; existe un énfasis sobre la investigación básica, antes que en la investigación aplicada; la mayoría de las investigaciones se refieren a niños con dificultades o discapacidades de aprendizaje. A pesar de que la investigación en este campo es cada vez mayor, las repercusiones de dichas investigaciones en el sistema educativo de Brasil no han sido registradas, lo cual es un desafío muy importante para los investigadores brasileños.
