Abstract
This paper analyses the association between TV news consumption and public attitudes towards immigration. A multi-level model is used to study the complex relationship between TV news consumption, how the media treat immigration and public attitudes towards minority groups based on a survey of university students. Multi-level analysis results show the impact of aggregate consumption of TV news on the perception of the current immigration phenomenon and the cognitive/affective components of attitude. It also demonstrates the usefulness of this analytical approach for understanding the processes that describe the relationship between the media and attitudes towards immigration.
Notes
1. At this point, news stories referring to the arrival of makeshift rafts, which are part of the images of ‘poverty and underdevelopment’, are not being taken into consideration. If they were, the index would be made up of all the televised news stories related to the more problematic facet of the phenomenon of immigration: images of crimes committed by immigrants, street violence, gender violence, terrorism, etc. For a complete description of the news stories classified and the methodology used by this observatory, please see the following link: http://www.migracom.com/publicaciones/fichero_56.pdf.
2. The variables introduced revolved around the grand mean with the aim of getting results that were more easily interpreted on the logical-substantive level.
3. In the variable ‘recollection of negative news on immigration’ the value 0 refers to images of ‘poverty and underdevelopment’ (arrival of makeshift rafts, poor living conditions of immigrants, etc.), while the value 1 refers to images of ‘crime and other problems’ related to immigration (crimes committed by immigrants, street gangs, gender violence, terrorism, etc.).
4. The variable ‘recollection of negative news on immigration’ was a dummy variable in which 0 meant images or news stories of ‘poverty and/or underdevelopment’, while 1 meant images of ‘crime and/or other problems’.
