Evolution of victimization, tolerance and detection of intimate partner violence among young Spanish women / Evolución de victimización, tolerancia y detección de la violencia de pareja entre mujeres jóvenes españolas

Abstract

Intimate partner violence that takes place in first couple relationships has received increasing attention in recent years, leading our knowledge on different topics to grow remarkably. The objective of this study is two-fold: on the one hand, we compare levels of victimization and tolerance for two samples, from two waves of assessment; and on the other hand, we focus on coherence among victimization and the use of labels such as abuse, fear and feeling trapped in the relationship in both waves. A total sample of 3,844 women between the ages of 16 and 21 took part in the study, 18% in the first wave in 2003–05 and 82% in the second wave in 2011–13. Data were collected using the Cuestionario de Violencia de Novios (CUVINO), a questionnaire that provides information on the prevalence of and tolerance towards eight different kinds of abuse, along with self-labelling questions on the perception of abuse. Results showed a similarity in prevalence and labelling in both waves of assessment, with higher tolerance in the second wave. We discuss the implications of these findings for improving current prevention programs on dating violence.

Resumen

La violencia que aparece en las primeras relaciones de pareja ha recibido una creciente atención durante los últimos años, registrándose un remarcable avance en su conocimiento. El presente estudio se marca un doble objetivo: comparar los niveles de victimización y tolerancia hacia la violencia de pareja para dos muestras de mujeres pertenecientes a dos oleadas de evaluación; y comparar la consistencia entre la experiencia de victimización y el uso de las etiquetas ‘maltratada’, ‘miedo’ o ‘atrapada’ en ambas oleadas. Participaron 3,844 mujeres de entre 16 y 21 años. Un 18% fueron evaluadas en los años 2003–05 y el 82% restante en los años 2011–13. El instrumento de evaluación utilizado fue el Cuestionario de Violencia de Novios (CUVINO), que refleja frecuencia y molestia que ocasionan ocho formas de abuso, incluyendo preguntas sobre la percepción de maltrato. Los resultados indican una similitud de victimización en ambas oleadas de evaluación y en la percepción del maltrato, así como una tolerancia mayor en el último período. Se discuten las implicaciones de estos resultados de cara a mejorar la prevención.
