It is a great pleasure for us to praise Rosalind Elster’s long-standing professional and courageous commitment to improve the journal Optimization to a high-level international journal. Our journal has a more than 40 years history. In 1970, the first volume of the journal Mathematische Operationsforschung und Statistik (the predecessor of the journal Optimization) was published. Due to an increasing number of submitted papers of both topics optimization and statistics, the journal Mathematische Operationsforschung und Statistik was split into two separate journals, the journal Optimization and the journal Statistics. The first issue of the journal Optimization was published in 1977.
The successful development of this journal would not have been possible without a close and fruitful collaboration between authors, reviewers, editors, editorial board and publisher. Especially, it would not have been possible without such an excellent managing editor like Rosalind Elster.
Rosalind Elster started her scientific career in the middle of the 1970s as a PhD student in the research group of Prof. Bachmann at the University of Education in Halle. In this period, she was dealing with geometrical optimization. At the same time, she also found a deep interest in convex analysis. Under the supervision of Prof. Göpfert, Rosalind Elster finished her habilitation on the field of vector optimization in 1991 at the Technical University of Leuna-Merseburg. Rosalind Elster made a vital contribution to the theory of optimization by significantly improving on the predictive power of the theory.
In the period between 1990 and 2016, Rosalind Elster worked as managing editor of the journal Optimization.
For many scientists working on the theoretical field of Optimization, Rosalind Elster is today one of the best known German faces. Rosalind Elster is an outstanding scientist and science manager who to a great extent contributed to the development of the journal Optimization. She improved the internationality and the innovative strength of our journal.
It is our aim to stress the contribution Rosalind Elster has made to the success story of the journal Optimization. Her dedication helped the journal to get a high international recognition. It stimulated greatly the field of Optimization.
Dear Rosi, congratulations on your 70th birthday! Thank you so much for your excellent work and for your friendship.
