SUMMARY

This article investigates pornography as a cultural product that reflects human consciousness and social relationships and communicates meaningfully with society. Against a background of public controversy the article examines (1) pornography as communication; (2) pornography's aesthetic functions in art, literature and film; (3) its function in censorship legislation; and (4) the pornographic and anti-pornographic industry.
