Some characteristics, directions and foci of current mass communication theory

Pages 9-17 | Published online: 04 Dec 2007

SUMMARY

On the basis of literature published during the last few years, this article sets out to identify some defining characteristics of current mass communication theory. Brief reference is made to three important shifts in focus and some new directions which hold promise for the future development of the field are identified. It is argued that mass communication theory has recently been undergoing important changes and that our progress into postmodernity necessitates serious attention not only to the transformation, inter alia in modes of communication, but also to the ways we try to understand the significance of the changes for our lives.
