Abstract

Molecular Electronics is a new and exciting field of technology. It makes a search for alternatives for silicon electronics and predicts that the physical limitations of silicon electronics can be overcome by its approach. The application of molecular electronics in information technology is promising. The concept of a bio or chemical computer, or a brainy computer, where an organic cell will act as the basic element has been formulated. The design of an ultra high speed, ultra high capacity and ultra high performance all-optical computer is another near term possibility of molecular electronics. Long distance very high data rate communication is also a possibility with the application of soliton. Even a solar cell known as molecular solar cell is believed to be a potential application of molecular electronics. In view of these, the present article will provide an introduction to the field.
