Abstract
Lightwave technology can be used with a number of advantages in microwave and millimetre-wave systems. In this paper, the application of lightwave technology related to optical control of microwave devices and circuits is reviewed. Various categories of this application are identified and the basic principle of operation relevant to each category is described. Finally, typical experimental results reported in the literature for optical generation, control of passive components, and control of solid-state devices are described. The advantages and special features of optical control have also been pointed out.
