Review on the Developments and Potential Applications of the Fiber Optic Distributed Temperature Sensing System

&
Pages 553-567 | Published online: 24 Jan 2021

Abstract

The distributed temperature sensing (DTS) system is useful for detecting its surrounding temperature. The fiber optic DTS system offers a number of unique features for which it is found useful in a number of potential applications, such as oil & gas pipeline monitoring, high power cables monitoring, transformers monitoring, fire detection, nuclear plant monitoring, etc. In this paper, we have reviewed the current status of fiber optic DTS systems along with their principle of operations, challenges, and potential applications. Besides the review on the development, and research in the field of fiber optic DTS system, we have also reviewed a number of commercially available DTS systems, and their potentials applications.
