Abstract
A SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY OF CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE SOCIAL BACKGROUND AND LIFESTYLE OF A GROUP OF PROVINCIAL RUGBY-FOOTBALL PLAYERS: The purpose of a survey in this connection is the great interest in sport existing over the world, as well as the big part it plays in society. A further reason is the great need for scientific sport research in South Africa. For the purpose of the survey the twenty Curry Cup rugby provinces in South Africa for the 1974 season, including Stellaland, were used. Different characteristics of the surveysgroup, e.g. age, home language, marital status, religious denomination, occupation, occupation of parents as well as the place where rugbyplayers grew up, ware taken into account when analysing the data. The necessity for further research in the field of sport, specifically rugby. has been emphasised and attention has been called to the vast field still unexplored in this regard.
