Abstract

The cultural ecological model of child rearing, developed within the context of stable societies, holds great promise for investigating parenting practices in transitional societies. This study focused on the perception of the rearing practices of a sample of the Indian community in South Africa which is a good example of a transitional society. Forty mothers and their children (age range 7 to 11 years) were tested independently on an extensive interview schedule whose objectives included the identification of specific rearing practices emphasized by the mothers and the perception of these mothers and their children of features which cause good/bad mothers and children. The results included (a) an overall congruence between mothers' and children's responses and (b) generally, a greater emphasis on behavioural features such as good manners, than on psychological features such as kindness which cause good/bad children. The findings were discussed in terms of the cultural ecological model and its possible extension to transitional communities.
