1. This information comes from a telephone interview with Mrs Elinor Sisulu on 4 May 2006. Born in Harare, Elinor Sisulu studied English and History at the University of Zimbabwe. She also read for the MA in Development Studies at the Institute for Social Studies in The Hague. She has worked in development and as a researcher for government, and is currently a writer and activist on the situation in Zimbabwe. She married Max Sisulu in 1986 and has written a well-received biography of her parents-in-law, Walter and Albertina Sisulu (see Sisulu Citation2003).

2. Copies of these documents are to be found in the papers of the late Professor John Barratt, former Director-General of the South African Institute of International Affairs, which are lodged in the Cullen Library at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
