ABSTRACT
Traumatic changes brought about by the Education Reform Act (ERA) have transformed the fabric of the headteacher's job. It is argued that the primary role of the headteacher is now that of manager as opposed to master teacher. Thus, there is a need to focus on the issues of headteacher selection, training and development to enhance the chance of ensuring efficient and effective school management. A study of the headteacher's role revealed that individuals perceived their job to have changed significantly as a result of ERA. Additionally, headteachers have training and development needs which have yet to be addressed. The findings are discussed in relation to their implications for the future selection, training and development of headteachers as school managers.
