Playing against all odds: pachinko and the culture of risk-taking in Japan’s crisis economy

Abstract

The Japanese gambling industry has been badly hit by two decades of economic crises. Shrinking household incomes and shifting consumer preferences have left their marks even on the pachinko business which formerly had been hailed as recession-resistant. This paper situates theory and practice of machine gambling in Japan at the beginning of the twenty-first century into the context of sociological debates on risk. Taking a closer look at recent developments in Japan’s giant gambling industry, it analyses the way in which regulators, providers and consumers have accommodated their behaviour to the changing socioeconomic environment of the risk society.

日本赌业受到二十年的经济危机的严重冲击。萎缩的家庭收入和转移消费者的喜好甚至在曾经被喻为抗衰退的日式弹珠机业务上留下了他们的痕迹。本文将日本赌博机在二十一世纪初的背景下理论和实践放入社会逻辑的辩论风险的内容中去。对最近日本赌博业发展的仔细研究后, 文章分析了法规制订者, 服务提供者和消费者将他们的行为放到不断变化的风险社会经济环境中去的方法。

A indústria do jogo japonesa foi severamente atingida por duas décadas de crises econômicas. A diminuição das rendas familiares e a mudança nas preferências de consumo deixaram suas marcas até mesmo na indústria do pachinko, que havia sido anteriormente aclamada como resistente a recessões. Este trabalho situa teoria e prática do jogo de aposta em máquinas no Japão no início do século XXI, em um contexto de debates sociológicos sobre o risco. Com um olhar mais próximo aos eventos recentes na gigantesca indústria do jogo do Japão, ele analisa a forma com que reguladores, fornecedores e consumidores acomodaram seus comportamentos ao ambiente socioeconomicamente instável da sociedade de risco.
