The Lesson Preparation Method: a way of investigating pre-service teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge

SUMMARY

Teacher education should build on the knowledge base that pre-service teachers already have on account of their lifelong learning in and outside of school. An international team of mathematics and science teacher educators developed a method of investigating the pedagogical content knowledge parts of this knowledge base. They asked pre-service teachers to prepare a lesson about a topic, e.g. area, as if they had to teach that lesson the next day. In this article the main aspects of the research environment are described and their effects on the research outcomes are evaluated.

La formation des professeurs devrait être basée sur les connaissances que les étudiants ont acquis au cours de leurs expériences d'apprentissage dans et en dehors de l'enseignement formel. Une équipe internationale de formateurs de professeurs en mathématiques et sciences physiques a développé une méthode pour identifier la partie pédagogique de ces connaissances préalables. On a demandé aux étudiants de préparer un cours sur un sujet comme s'ils devaient le donner le lendemain. Dans le présent article les aspects principaux de la situation expérimentale seront décrits et les résultats seront évalués.

La formación del profesorado debería tomar en cuenta la base de conocimientos que los profesores en formación inicial han adquirido a lo largo de su educación tanto dentro como fuera del sistema educativo formal. Un equipo intemacional de investigadores, integrado porformadores de profesores de matemáticas y ciencias en formaciôn inicial, ha desarrollado un método de análisis de los contenidos pedagógicos que constituyen la base de conocimientos de estos profesores noveles. Dicho método consiste en invitar a los profesores en formaciôn inicial a preparar una clase sobre temas específicos, como por ejemplo el concepto de ‘área’, como si tuvieran que impartir esa clase el dia siguiente. En la presente contribuciôn se detallan los aspectos más importantes del entorno en que se realizó esta investigaciôn al mismó tiempo que se evalúan los efectos sobre los resultados finales.

Nevertheless, we managed to evoke PTs’ skills and images by stimulating them to use the materials available and to describe their lesson. By that, we did indeed penetrate into their pedagogical and content skills. Based on previous and our own experiences in teacher education, we chose a combination of ‘preparing a lesson and telling about it/being interviewed on it’, in which the test persons, because of the ‘school-nearness’, are thought to really be able and willing to present the prepared lesson. Such a design strengthens—according to Renkl (1995)— learning results, especially a deeper understanding.
