Abstract

The measurement of a destinations' network performance is a complex task due to the diverse actors involved and their complex relationships and there is a need to find simplified and manageable approaches for evaluation. One approach that is frequently used when a situation is too complex or requires a great amount of analysis is to divide the problem in order to conquer it. In this paper, the tourism chain is used to provide a simplified and manageable performance measurement unit for network efficiency. A tourism chain is a pattern in the way tourists interact with a destination. The purpose of this study is to develop a performance index for a tourism chain utilizing fuzzy set theory. The performance measurement model developed was then used to examine the effectiveness of various management strategies. The study found that the performance measurement system may be included in a management information feedback system to help improve decision making processes and the performance of tourism chains.
