Augmentation of targeted delivery with pulsed high intensity focused ultrasound.

To the Editors and Whom It May Concern,

Our recently published review article “Augmentation of targeted delivery with pulsed high intensity focused ultrasound” contains a number of unintentional misrepresentations for which we accept full responsibility. We would like to clarify these items herein and offer our profoundest apologies to those who have been offended.

The first item is our statement that “… this paper will review, in some detail, the feasibility studies that were carried out in our lab over the past 5 years.” This may lead to the impression that a) the work was carried out at our current institution in Houston, and b) that the two authors were solely or principally responsible for the work done. This was not the intention of the statement. The statement should have informed the reader that the studies were carried out in the labs of Dr. King Li at Stanford and the NIH, and will be continued at his current location in Houston, and, furthermore, that these studies were only possible due to the contributions of the multitude of researchers whose names appear in the referenced papers. We sincerely apologize to any staff from Stanford or NIH who felt their contribution was taken for granted by this statement.

The second item that has come to our attention is that a substantial portion of the first five introductory paragraphs of this article are similar to text that appeared first in an excellent review article by Dr. V. Frenkel and Dr. K. C. P. Li entitled “Potential role of pulsed-high intensity focused ultrasound in gene therapy” (Future Oncology, 2006 Feb; 2(1):111–9). This text, which was the original contribution of Dr. Frenkel to the earlier article, was supplied erroneously to the current article from the archives of Dr. Li. For this oversight, he sincerely apologizes to his past and present co-authors. Both authors of the current paper offer their profound apologies to Dr. Frenkel for failing to acknowledge his contribution to the text in question, and to the editors of Future Oncology for failing to reference their article.

Yours faithfully

Brian E. O’Neill and King C. P. Li
