Exercises and solutions in statistical theory

Working through exercises whose solutions are nontrivial is the best way to understand statistical concepts. This is the guiding principle of this book, which is intended for advanced undergraduate students as well as for those who are interested in quantitative research areas such as biostatistics, engineering, computer science, and many others. Also this book is suitable for students who want to understand in-depth principles of statistical theory. But it cannot be recommended as a primary textbook.

The book contains sixchapters. The first chapter consists of basic results needed to help solve the exercises that follow. The exercises and detailed solutions are divided into fivechapters, beginning with probability theory and finishing with statistical inference. Many exercises deal with real life examples in very important application areas; medicine, epidemiology, clinical trials, actuarial science, social sciences, psychometrics, chemistry, genetics, etc. The exercises vary in difficulty from basic questions to more complicated ones. The most difficult exercises are denoted by asterisks. Detailed solutions are provided for odd numbered exercises. The authors noted that solution for even numbered exercises are available directly from the publisher, CRC Press.

This reviewer enjoyed reading the book and I recommend it to both teachers and students. It is fair to say that this book should be part of the recommended literature for advanced statistical courses.
