Motivational Issues in Premature Termination of Treatment for Sexual Dysfunction

Pages 153-161 | Published online: 14 Dec 2007

Abstract

A survey of controlled clinical trials on treatment of sexual dysfunction indicates an average drop-out rate of 30%. Little is known about the distribution of drop-out rates over specific sexual disorders or about the mechanisms which explain premature termination of therapy

Theoretical explanations and clinical impressions are discussed in a bahavioural context to specify motivational issues related to premature termination of treatment. Therapeutic strategies are presented to ensure that source preconditions of therapy are met to facilitate cooperation. Data from our study on treatment for couples suffering from secondary sexual dysfunction in the female partner are reported in which couples who terminated prematurely were compared with those who did not. In our sample dropping out is best predicted by looking at the stability of the marital relationship
