ABSTRACT
A proton-encoded local field 2D NMR spectrum of 4′-pentyloxy-4-biphenylcarbonylnitrile (5OCB) was published in 2003 (Liquid Crystals, 2003; 30: 611–615) but not completely assigned, nor analysed to yield information on the structure, orientational order and conformational distribution of the molecules in the nematic phase. This spectrum is fully assigned and analysed here to yield 34 residual dipolar coupling constants at a single temperature which are used to characterise the distribution of conformers in the pentyloxy chain.
