Assignments in which students have to use course ideas in relation to their own experience are one increasingly common means of trying to ensure that the practical application of concepts and techniques in the workplace is an assessable output of a course. Rob Paton of the UKOU School of Management describes a controlled study of tutor marking practices and reliability on an Open University Management course. He concludes that while the reliability of marking was acceptable, the results confirm that these developments raise important questions about current University approaches to assessment.
