Margaret Haughey

For those involved in the development of distance education materials, a number of recurrent pedagogical issues have to be addressed. Often, however, the shape of the distance education system itself is allowed to determine the answers. Kliebard's metaphors for curriculum design: the metaphor of growth, the metaphor of production, and the metaphor of travel represent three very different approaches. This article by Margaret Haughey of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, focuses on these issues, not necessarily to resolve them but to make the questions clearer and provide a basis for discussion.
