Abstract
The current status of our knowledge of Malassezia furfur is reviewed. First, the taxonomy, morphology and physiology/biochemistry of the dimorphic yeast is covered. The distribution and incidence of M. furfur on normal human skin and the association of M. furfur with cutaneous diseases is then discussed. The literature on systemic M. furfur infection is presented followed by a critical review of host defence interactions with M. furfur.
