Exploring the role of music in grief

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to gather descriptive information about the natural interactions between adult grievers and music. The survey gathered quantitative and qualitative data and yielded a response rate of .06% (141/2547). Results revealed that the majority of participants (94%) intentionally used music during their grief journey. Unique roles of music in grief were discovered and insights were offered as a pattern emerged that reflected the Dual Process Model of Grief (Stroebe & Schut, Citation1999). Future research in this area may contribute to a greater understanding of the natural interactions between grievers and music.
