Abstract
The epiphytic diatoms found on the cells of Cymatopleura solea and Nitzschia sigmoidea have been isolated and cultured in the laboratory. Morphological observations of the epiphytic species have been made using scanning electron microscopy. The systematic position of these species has been revised. It was possible to differentiate formae in Amphora pediculus and Synedra parasitica. The small form of A. pediculus is considered as A. perpusilla and S. parasitica var. subconstricta is raised to the species-level and renamed S. binodis (Ehr.) nov.comb. due to the nomenclatural priority. A small Cyclotella-species attached to S. binodis was found to be C. glomerata.
