Abstract
Five cultures of fragilarioid diatoms have been investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy. The clones have been maintained in uni-algal culture for many years and a major object was to discover what effect, if any, this long period of culturing had on the basic morphology of the cells. In addition, the identity of the original isolates required re-checking in view of recent changes in the classification of some araphid genera.
