Abstract

A diatom that conforms to no published generic description has been isolated from marine intertidal sands at several localities on coasts of the British Isles and continental Europe. It has araphid pennate symmetry with a rimoportula and sunken ocellulus at each valve pole, retraction of the protoplast from the valve face and an organic stalk at one pole that attaches to the substratum—a sand grain. The possible phylogenetic affinities of the genus are discussed.
