Abstract
A new diatom genus is described: Andrewsiella gen. nov. It has similarities with the genera Rhaphoneis Ehrenberg (1844), Opephora Petit (1888) and Dimerogramma (Ralfs in Pritchard 1861). It differs from them by the presence of a single rimoportula located at each end of the two apices with no apical porefield. The generic type for the genus Andrewsiella gen. nov. is the fossil diatom species Andrewsiella fossile (Grunow) Jurkschat comb. nov. (first described as Dimerogramma fossile Grunow in Cleve & Möller 1877–1882), a species characteristic for Miocene deposits of the northern Atlantic.
