Abstract
A new marine diatom genus and species, Brassierea vivens Hein & Winsborough, is described from linear stromatolites in the Exuma Islands, Bahamas. This small araphid diatom is bilaterally asymmetrical with a biarcuate dorsal margin and straight to slightly concave ventral margin. The axial area is eccentric and half-lanceolate in shape. The areolae are arranged in transapical striae that are separated internally by siliceous ribs. A rimoportula and apical pore field are present at both poles. The valve outline of this taxon is very similar to Amphora bigibba Grunow and Eunotia bidentula Wm. Smith; however, no trace of a raphe is present. Brassierea is similar to the freshwater taxon Synedra Ehrenberg and the marine to brackish water taxon Tabularia (Kützing) Williams & Round, but lacks the ocellulimbus present in these taxa and is bilaterally asymmetrical.
