Abstract
Cyclostephanos patagonicus Guerrero & Echenique sp. nov. is described from lakes and rivers of western Patagonia, Argentina. The new species is distinguished from other species of the genus by the broad, short, tubular external opening of the rimoportula, mantle areolae with domed cribra, and valve face pores, when present, externally resembling fultoportulae but internally without satellite pores. Considering that this taxon exhibits characters distinctive of both Cyclostephanos and Stephanodiscus, the difficult separation of these two genera has become even more problematical.
