Abstract
The generic name Discoplea Ehrenb. is neither available in zoological nomenclature nor validly published in botanical nomenclature. Of the 23 binomials that Ehrenberg applied to new species and for which he published descriptions and/or illustrations, all but two were validated by either Kützing (13 names) or Ralfs (8 names) by being transferred into validly published genera (Cyclotella and Coscinodiscus). The validated names should be accredited directly to either Kützing or Ralfs, as the case may be. They may serve as currently accepted names (e.g., Cyclotella astraea Kütz.) or as basionyms of currently accepted names (e.g., Coscinodiscus graecus Kütz., the basionym of the combination Puncticulata graeca (Kütz.) Håk.).
