Abstract
Gyrosigma schmidianum nov. sp. and Gyrosigma tubicolum nov. sp., both observed in material from the Red Sea, superficially resemble Gyrosigma species with a linear contour like G. balticum (Ehrenberg) Rabenhorst and G. (baltietim var.?) diminutum (Grunow in Cleve and Grunow) Cleve respectively. The new species, however, belong to the section Attenuati sensu Peragallo (instead of the Acuminati and Strigiles respectively) and differ in several respects from the known species in that group. G. tubicolum was seen to grow in tubes.
