THE OSTEOLOGY OF DIMORPHODON MACRONYX, A NON-PTERODACTYLOID PTEROSAUR FROM THE LOWER JURASSIC OF DORSET, ENGLAND

ABSTRACT

Dimorphodon macronyx (Buckland, 1829) is one of the earliest known Jurassic pterosaurs and the first English pterosaur to have been formally described; the original specimens from the London Natural History Museum have not been fully reviewed since Richard Owen’s monograph of 1870. This monograph provides a detailed, comparative osteological description and emended diagnosis of D. macronyx, based primarily on the four key London and British Geological Survey specimens, and supplemented by the other known skeletal material. Previously undescribed palatal bones uncovered in one of the Natural History Museum specimens (NHMUK 41212) in 2002 are also described and a tentative reconstruction of the palate presented. A short review of previous phylogenetic studies on the taxonomic status of D. macronyx is provided.

Dimorphodon macronyx (Buckland, 1829) est l’un des ptérosaures jurassiques les plus anciens connus et le premier ptérosaure anglais formellement décrit; les spécimens originaux du Natural History Museum de Londres n’ont pas été pleinement révisés depuis les travaux de Richard Owen en 1870. Cette monographie présente ici une description ostéologique comparative et une diagnose corrigée détaillées de D. macronyx, basées principalement sur les quatre spécimens clés du Museum et du Geological Survey, et sur l’addition de matériel squelettique connu. Des os du palais jamais décrits à ce jour et découverts sur l’un des spécimens du Natural History Museum (NHMUK 41212) en 2002

sont aussi décrits et une reconstitution provisoire du palais est présentée. Un court réexamen d’anciennes études phylogénétiques du statut taxonomique de D. macronyx est présenté.

KURZFASSUNG

Dimorphodon macronyx (Buckland, 1829) ist einer der ersten bekannten Pterosaurier aus dem Jura und der erste englische Pterosaurier, der systematisch beschrieben wurde. Die originalen Exemplare aus dem Naturhistorischen Museum in London wurden seit Richard Owens Monographie von 1870 nicht umfassend überprüft. Diese Publikation liefert eine detaillierte und vergleichende osteologische Beschreibung und verbesserte Diagnostik von D. macronyx, hauptsächlich basierend auf den vier Schlüssel-Exemplaren aus London und der British Geological Survey sowie zusätzlichem Skelett-Material. Bislang nicht beschriebene Gaumenknochen, die in einem der Exemplare (NHMUK 41212) aus dem Naturhistorischen Museum in 2002 freigelegt wurden, werden ebenfalls beschrieben und eine vorläufige Rekonstruktion des Gaumens wird präsentiert. Zusätzlich wird eine kurze Revision der vorherigen phylogenetischen Studien über den taxonomischen Status von D. macronyx bereitgestellt.
