A finding first published in a study by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and English Heritage in 1993 (RICS, 1993).

Principally the English Heritage money was derived from the Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS) which depends upon joint initiatives between Local Authorities/Public Agencies and the private sector (see English Heritage, 1999).

Enshrined in the National Trust Act of 1907 which established that the Trust “shall be established for the purpose of promoting the permanent preservation for the benefit of the nation of lands and tenements (including buildings) of beauty or historic interest.” (Waterson, 1994).

In this context ‘conservation’ is taken to be “about negotiating the transition from past to future in such a way as to secure the transfer of maximum significance” (Thrackray, 1995)

Ralph Allen (1693–1764) was responsible for landscaping at Prior Park for 30 years from the late 1730s. He was also associated with the promotion of Bath Stone as a material for the construction of eighteenth-century Bath.

Directive 2001/42/EC means that all regional and locally produced land-use planning policy will require a Strategic Environmental Assessment, which will include an appraisal of sustainability components of policy.
