Notes
1. Although the article should be considered a result of the common work and reflection of the two authors, Lo Piccolo took primary responsibility for sections 1 and 5, and Schilleci for sections 2, 3 and 4.
2. This is what happened to the planning instrument dealt with in the case study of the present article, the PRUSST (acronym for Programma di Riqualificazione Urbana e Sviluppo Sostenibile del Territorio—Programme for Urban regeneration and Sustainable Development of the Territory), which has been ironically renamed ‘In search of lost time’ due to the fact that, when read in Italian, PRUSST corresponds in sound with the name of the French writer Marcel Proust.
3. On a provincial and regional level the situation is almost just the same.
4. This research was initially carried out as part of the degree thesis of G. Chirco, V. Farruggia and G. Sinaguglia at Palermo University and submitted in March 2004; supervisors: Professors B. Rossi-Doria and F. Schilleci.
5. PC no. 1 was commissioned by the councillor for Economic Development and was related to a district made up of the municipal territories of Marsala, Mazara del Vallo, Salemi and Vita.
6. Three PRUSST public calls have so far been made for project submission. Regional authorities have so far examined and approved only the first two, while the third is still being considered by the Regional Board for Town Planning.
